Sweet William is a perennial often grown as a biennial. In late spring and summer the taller varieties produce lovely 30-60cm spikes of flat flowers in dense heads with a spicy scent.
These brilliant cut flowers come in single and double forms favouring white, pink and red shades.
Variety Wee Willie and Indian Carpet are dwarf forms. Grow in sun to light shade.
They enjoy lime and a bit of compost but grow in most soils that drain well. Now is an excellent time to divide and replant old stock or sow seed.
Sweet William makes an superb ground cover when planted over spring bulbs like hyacinth, tulip, freesia, windflower and crocus.
The dark green foliage highlights the bulb flowers then hides their withering leaves with flowers of their own.
