For a carpet of flowers in the rock garden try planting Helianthemum, the Sun Rose. Their name in Greek means "sun flower" and these perennial herbs do prefer a sunny, well drained, rather dry spot.
The 100 species are widely distributed throughout Eurasia and the Mediterranean where they often grow in poorer, somewhat alkaline soils.
They are easily grown in temperate climates and are fully hardy to cold winters. Some species are sub-shrubs to 60cm but most are woody, evergreen mounds up to 30cm high that spread to 1m across.
The oval or elliptical foliage is covered in a greyish white felt giving the plants a frosted appearance. The flowers appear in spring and summer in clusters or singly atop hundreds of thin stems.
The rose-like discs are 3-5cm across in single and double yellow, white, pink, salmon, carmine and rose red giving the plant it's common name, "sun rose".
These resemble the Cistus or Rock Rose to which they are related. To prolong flowering, trim back flowers once they fade and a second crop will soon follow.
