Mid spring is an excellent time to plant lettuce seed or seedlings. Choose a sunny site out of drying winds. The soil should be thoroughly cultivated and enriched with well rotted manure and compost to create a humus-rich soil that is light, free-draining but constantly moist. A nitrogen enriched commercial fertiliser can also be dug into the soil a few weeks ahead of planting. Sow the seed thinly in a row or patch. Lettuce can also be grown to harvest in containers or started in small pots for transplanting into the garden later.
