Here's a crop that thrives in cold conditions and almost any soil, even clays. Broad beans can tolerate severe frosts and freezes with little damage making them a hardy crop for colder districts but they will thrive in the warm northern wet as well.
They do demand lots of lime, dolomite being preferred, and they don't mind a dusting of super or rock phosphate and even a little potash or wood ash. Adding compost to create a fluffy, freely-draining soil is also a good idea.
