The best known of all the Aloes, Aloe vera, is also known as the True or Medicinal Aloe. This important succulent plant has been cultivated and harvested since very ancient times. It was one of Cleopatra's secret beauty ingredients. During that classic age, Greek and Roman physicians discovered that the sap of this plant would aid in the healing of wounds.
They also made concoctions from its juices that were used as both a laxative and purgative. When the leaves are split open they produce a clear gelatinous, sticky sap. When rubbed over the skin, the fresh sap immediately soothes burns.
