Some of our most rewarding winter/spring flowers are middle weights: medium height plants up to about 60cm tall. One of the classics of this group is the calendula or pot marigold. Bushy plants are topped with large often fluffy double daisy blooms.
That range in bright orange, yellow, and bronze shades. The calendula is actually classified as a herb. The chopped young blooms and buds are used to season beef. They thrive in sun or dry part shade and much prefer poor soil, but rich in lime.
Cheiranthus, better known as wallflower, is an old fashioned favorite for beautiful fragrant winter cut flowers. They prefer an average to good, well drained, limy soil in a sunny spot sheltered from wind. Given these conditions the wallflower will produce masses of single and double spikes of flowers in lovely warm shades all winter and spring.
